Peck Slip was designed in the 1950’s as a concrete flat slab structure for the USPS. Following negotiations with the USPS, the 70,800 SF facility was converted into a Primary School to educate over 700 students from grades Pre-K through 5. A 44,800 SF steel structure was added on top of the concrete structure to accommodate a gym and several more classrooms, as well as a roof playyard. PS 343 officially opened September 2015. YAS initially performed a feasibility study and a review of the reinforced flat plate slab structure implementing non-destructive and destructive testing procedures to determine existing structural elements. These investigations included coring, scanning, reinforcement and test pits to expose pile caps. This was required to determine the capacity of the existing building.
