Located at 72nd street and the FDR Drive, the Hospital for Special Surgery is a unique structure of prefabricated-precast concrete and structural steel designed to carry six stories of hospital facilities over the 75 ft. span of the FDR drive. The original structure, an 180,000 sf, seismically designed, reinforced concrete building, was designed with future expansion in the plan.
Due to an overwhelming demand for specialty procedures, growing outpatient and surgical capacities and a larger hospital staff, two new 3-story steel additions were built, one on top of the existing 8-story East Wing over the FDR Drive, and another overbuild to the existing 6-story West Wing. The project also included the installation of two passenger elevators, two service elevators and the replacement of HVAC chillers. The total floor area of the expansions is 90,000 sf with a total cost of $39 million.
In addition to this expansion project, Ysrael A. Seinuk, P.C. provided structural engineering services for the installation of an MRI suite in the hospital’s lower level which required the removal of Col. 92 at the basement level and reinforcement of the existing basement slab for the loads imposed by the new MRI units.
